  • Turkish coffee has its own traditional way when it comes to serving. You can use Turkish cups also called “demitasse cups” or “kahve fincanı” as we say in Turkish.
  • Keeping a glass of cold water beside the coffee is also a good gesture. People drink water first and clear their palate. After that, they enjoy the real flavor and taste of coffee sips.
  • Turkish people serve coffee with their famous sweet dish named “Kunafe” or “Baklava” and “Lokum”. However, if you don’t have a Turkish delight at the moment serve it with chocolates, cookies, or any other traditional delight.

Recipe Variations

Traditional Turkish coffee comes with three different sweetness levels.

The first one is less sweet (az sekerli) and uses 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in one cup. The second one is medium sweet (orta sekerli) and uses 1 teaspoon per cup. The third one is extra sweet (sekerli) and uses 2 teaspoons per cup. Although you can skip the sugar entirely.

Note: Sugar isn’t the only ingredient to add sweetness. Honey, milk, or cream can be added as well.

Additional Tips for Perfect Turkish Coffee

Pay heed to these useful tips so that you always have a perfect consistency and enough foam on the top of the coffee.

  • Always use fresh coffee. If you use stale or your coffee sits in a pantry for a long time, then it will never give a perfect foam. Once opened, put your coffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator since air allows coffee to stale fast.
  • Also, don’t leave a steel spoon in the coffee. To keep the aroma and texture in their original condition, keep the coffee cool and dry. It will always bring a better and fresh taste.
  • Filter the water whenever you make Turkish coffee. Never try making coffee with unfiltered hot and warm water.
  • Treat your coffee kindly. Never stir the mixture too fast. Be gentle and mix ingredients well in the coffee pot.
  • Make it on the lowest heat, stirring 2-3 times until the coffee starts to rise. Never let it boil. Remove the pot right before the coffee boils and put the foam into the cups straight away.
  • Pour the coffee slowly into the cups once you are done reheating the coffee so that the bubbles remain safe.
  • For more flavors, add a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon powder. You can also put a cinnamon stick while brewing.
