What Is Backflushing?

Backflushing is a process used in the maintenance of espresso machines. It helps to clear out built-up coffee residue from inside the machine (brew head), ensuring optimal performance and flavor for each cup of espresso.

This process utilizes water and cleaning tablets inserted into specific parts of the machine to help flush out any built-up debris. Now let’s move to the next part, which is how to do backflushing using rocket espresso tablets.

How To Use Rocket Espresso Cleaning Tablets For Backflushing? Step By Step Guide

Here’s the step-by-step process for using rocket espresso cleaning tablets for backflushing. But before you start, ensure you have the tablets and Pallo brush ready. The brush will help in cleaning the brew head manually.

Step 1 – Insert Cleaning Tablets In The Portafilter Basket

Start by removing any portafilters (the handle with a filter inside) from the group head (the piece holding the portafilter). Then, place 1-2 cleaning tablets into the portafilter basket and insert them into its slot on the group head without pushing down.

This process will allow you to clean all parts of the portafilter without anything oozing out from underneath it. But to do this, you have to follow the second step in which we’ll pull the lever so the tablet can dissolve in water and clean the brew head.

Step 2 – Clean The Brew Head

After you insert the rocket espresso cleaning tablets in the portafilters, it’s time to start the cleaning process. For this, pull the lever up on the portafilter’s side, wait for 10 seconds, then pull it down.

It’s not a one-time process; you must follow the same step repeatedly for at least 7 – 8 or a maximum of 10 times for 10 seconds. Thus, use a stopwatch and the counter apps on your smartphone while working.

Step 3 – Clean The Brew Head With Brush

Remove the portafilter from the respective slot on top of the group head, then clear out. Take the Pallo brush; this is to clean the brew head manually with your hands. To do this, hold the brush and clean the head with it for a few minutes until you see that the head looks clean.

After cleaning, use the lever on the coffee machine’s side again. Remember, you don’t need to use a portafilter basket this time. When you pull the lever up, the water will come out and go into the drip tray.

Step 4 – Repeat The Step

Remember the second step we shared above? This one is similar to it. This is the last step in which you’ll add the portafilter basket into the brew head. Then pull the lever up and wait for a maximum of 5 seconds and pull it down. Repeat the same process 10 times for 5 seconds.

After following all the steps above now, you only have to do a small task. Take a cup and brew, and then discard it. This is to ensure that all the water mixed with the cleaning tablet has been discarded.

The Bottom Line

Backflushing is important to keeping your espresso machine running smoothly and efficiently over time. So don’t forget about giving yours some with the help of the rocket espresso cleaning tablets.

Most experts recommend backflushing your espresso machine every week—or even more often if you use your machine frequently throughout the day. However, check the manufacturer’s instructions —some machines may require frequent backflushing.
